Let’s face it—life can get overwhelming at times. Between juggling work responsibilities, family obligations, and those endless to-do lists, burnout can feel like a relentless a**hole that won't leave you alone!
I'm a "gig" worker. Not only do I work for myself, booking health coaching clients and Pilates clients, but I also work at a few different Pilates studios and wellness establishments. Tax season is a NIGHTMARE, to say the least.
Add that to trying to build my business so I don't have to work at these different places, and it feels like all I do is hustle—all of the time. But. I love what I do and hope my hard work will pay off and the sizzle of this never-ending hustle will soon end!
However, the truth is that if you sizzle, you will also fizzle and if you don't give yourself a break, it can have dangerous consequences for your mental health.
But what if I told you that embracing a little “bed rot” could be your unexpected remedy to the fizzle of hustle culture burnout? It has been a game changer for me!
Grab your comfiest blanket because we’re about to dive into the ROT!
Is Bed Rot a Thing?
It sure is!
You might be wondering, what exactly is bed rot, especially if you're a Gen Xer like me since this term seems to have been invented by Gen Z? Simply put, bed rot refers to those hours, days, or weekends when you allow yourself to lounge in bed for longer than usual, not feeling guilty about it.
Not feeling guilty is KEY!
It’s a time dedicated to relaxation, nostalgia (because you were a kid the last time you probably did this), and possibly binge-watching that YA series or Victorian murder-drama you've meant to get to.
Societal pressures, workaholism, and (what I call) "performative busy culture" often guilt-trip us into staying productive even when we're fizzling out. However, taking these breaks can be crucial for mental health.
By removing responsibilities, we give ourselves permission to recharge, unwind, and ROT. AND eat Oreos in bed. Or maybe that's just me!
The Mechanics of Burnout
Before we jump into how bed rot can fight burnout, let’s look at what burnout truly is.
Burnout is not just being tired; it’s a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress. Symptoms can include fatigue, irritability, decreased productivity, and physical ailments. This could be related to stressors at work, relationships, and life’s expectations in general. It can chip away at our energy levels until we feel completely drained.
It can feel like you're running out of gas, much like your ovaries are running out of estrogen!
Add perimenopause and menopause to the mix, and you've created the perfect conditions for a total breakdown.
But. It doesn't have to come to that!
Recognizing you need a break is the first step. The second step is finding a way to make it happen. The third is quite possibly the hardest -- not feeling guilty about it!
Bed Rot is a Restorative Break
Research has shown that taking psychological breaks is incredibly important for maintaining mental health. Switching off from the world stimulates creativity and problem-solving skills, allowing the brain to recharge effectively.
Remember the last time you were sick and someone took care of you? It's entirely possible this was when you were a kid. How did you feel (other than the sick part)? Maybe loved, relaxed, free of pressure? Now, picture yourself feeling that way now. This is what I want for you!
Say to yourself, "Those are tomorrow's problems." Then, crawl into your bed and start to ROT!
When we give ourselves the gift of time—specifically long hours of doing nothing, snuggled up in bed, or wherever suits us—we allow our minds to wander. This wandering can lead to new ideas or perspectives.
In many cases, the best solutions come when we least expect them, when our brain has a chance to finally unplug!
Bed Rot for Burnout Requires Balance
Engaging in bed rot is NOT the same as sinking into depression; instead, it's about finding balance.
It’s a controlled choice to say no to the outside, unplug and unwind. That said, it CAN be a slippery slope into the dark side, so it's a good idea to set some ground rules to ensure you don’t drift into the abyss of languishing!
Here are a few suggestions:
Limit Your Time: Designate specific days or hours for bed rot. Knowing it’s coming can help regulate stress and help you feel less guilty about enjoying your downtime. Having a set time to end your rot can prevent sliding into procrastination and other negative behaviors.
Establish a Cozy Environment: Create an atmosphere that encourages relaxation—fresh sheets, dim lighting, and a comfy blanket can work wonders—also, having everything you need near you. This might be your remote, phone, books, or TheraGun for...um...dealing with those pesky knots in your shoulders!
Food Feeds the Soul: Prepare some favorite snacks or beverages. Comfort food can elevate the experience, making it feel even more deserving. OR plan to order from your favorite restaurants! If alcohol is involved, be mindful not to over-consume.
Be Clear About Phone Usage: Social media and news can make us feel BAD. You KNOW this. So. Limit yourself to what you look at (Cat videos on TikTok only!) and/or limit the TIME you spend looking at these things. Setting a literal timer can be most helpful.
Social Stigma and Guilt
Many people view bed rot as a sign of laziness, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Society often praises productivity and hustle at the expense of mental health.
F*ck that!
Understanding that it’s perfectly okay to take a break—especially one that involves ROT—can be challenging, but it can also be so worth it!
Remember, taking a day off to recharge is not a setback. It can actually increase your productivity when you return to your responsibilities. So, please don’t feel guilty about staying in your PJs longer than usual, binging School Spirits Season Two, and eating microwave popcorn in bed.
It's all part of the experience!
In a world that thrives on busy schedules and endless to-do lists, bed rot might just be your secret weapon against burnout. Allowing yourself the grace to lounge and disconnect is not just an indulgence; it’s a fundamental aspect of maintaining mental wellness. By embracing these moments of rest, you create space for rejuvenation, creativity, and clarity.
So, next time you need a break, don't be afraid to ROT!
I'm rotting, er, I mean ROOTING for you!
